Shawna Butson-Brodie ~ CST, CMT
Somatic Therapist, Educator, Body-Whisperer
"Within my body are all the sacred places of the world, and the most profound pilgrimage I can ever make is within my own body." ~ Sahara
I am the daughter of a nurse-midwife-healer-teacher, and an astronomer-architect-artist-builder…my earliest formative influences. From childhood, I've been fascinated by intersections of mind, body, and spirit. I consider myself a "somanaut"...just as an astronaut navigates outer space, the somanaut explores the inner space of human form. I study how we are shaped and healed through movement, stillness, touch, and our connection to soul/source energy in the Universe.
My personal journey into bodywork started as a teen...studying anatomy, dance, yoga, breath, metaphysics, and meditation. I sharpened this focus with professional degrees in Health Promotion & Wellness Education (1997, University of Georgia), which covered extensive anatomy/physiology and kinesiology, exercise science, nutrition, psychology, and public health communication. A year later I completed a degree in Advanced Clinical Massage & Bodywork (1998, Utah College of Massage Therapy, 1000+ hours), advancing my knowledge of anatomical form/function, swedish and sports massage, deep tissue, structural integration, spa therapies, acupressure, reflexology, craniosacral, shiatsu, therapeutic stretching, sound therapy, plus intuition training and business development.
For over a decade, I practiced as a nationally certified licensed massage therapist. I specialized in deep-tissue, structurally focused techniques. During those years, I gained experience in the spa, chiropractic, fitness, yoga, and holistic health industries. I taught clinical massage therapy and injury prevention for 3 years at an accredited California school. Additionally, I completed coursework in human energy system healing (2004-2006, LionHeart Institute of Transpersonal Energy Healing).
After returning to my Georgia hometown, I met my husband, Chris (also a bodyworker). My interest shifted towards myo-fascial release techniques, a "less is more" approach. In 2007, I started in private practice and added new specialties in Thai yoga bodywork (2008), craniosacral therapy (2010), and Yamuna body rolling (2016). On the side, I've led dance meditation movement classes for many years at yoga studios...a means to release tension, free yourself from the inside-out, and foster joy in the community.
The CranioSacral System consists of the membranes, fluid, and bones that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It plays a vital role in maintaining the health of the central nervous system, which governs all functions of the body. Since the brain and spinal cord are enclosed within the CranioSacral system, it's easy to see the broad influence it has over a variety of bodily functions.
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle form of touch that enhances the flow of fluid around the brain and spinal cord, as well as the web of connective tissue throughout the body (fascia). This fluid is produced in the brain, creating a slow rhythmic pulse as it circulates. Improved flow of this fluid provides the body with greater resilience, helping it to heal and restore healthy, balanced function. CST helps to amplify your natural healing response, to unwind tension, reduce pain, speed recovery, and improve homeostatic balance.
CranioSacral sessions take place on a massage table, fully-clothed. A light touch is used on to follow your CranioSacral rhythm. The flow of cerebro-spinal fluid reveals tension or restrictions, much like stones diverting water in a stream. Wherever the rhythm feels out of balance, gentle techniques are used to improve alignment, energy flow, and restore vitality. CranioSacral clients often report feeling...
Many people use CranioSacral for stress reduction, pain management, and to boost immune function. For chronic health concerns, tensions can take time to release... especially if they've been established for many years. A series of 3 to 5 sessions generally ensures progress, and will indicate if continued therapy is warranted.
Because CST enhances the body's natural healing processes, it is increasingly used as a preventive health measure. It has the ability to sustain a healthy immune system, promote relaxation, and calm the body's fight-or-flight response. Our health can be compromised by external factors, but also by hormones and chemicals released in response to the stress and strain of life. CST improves your health from the inside-out and gives a greater sense of well-being.
The CranioSacral System is a water-tight tube inside the bony spinal column. It is filled with cerebro-spinal fluid (similar to amniotic fluid). The brain and spinal cord float inside this watery core, our inner ocean. In concert with the heartbeat and breath, this system pulses the fluid at a slow pace of 8-12 cycles per minute. This can be identified with a gentle touch or with scientific instruments alike.
